I have always loved photography. The idea that you can capture a moment in time with one click; a moment that will never exist again is mind blowing. Taking Photography One has opened my eyes to how much more you can catch in an image than just a moment in time. In my eyes, each image I captured with the film camera tells a story. The photos of the young women portray trapped souls and fierce survivors. The images of the young man portray confusion and maybe loss. The roots and leaves in the water create an idea about death and rebirth. As one thing falls another prevails (i.e. the leaves v. the tree itself). Suddenly taking photos was less about capturing a pretty image and more about creating emotions.
Using a film camera was something very new to me. Learning how to get the right exposures was probably the most difficult. At different times of the day, but in the exact same location, the amount of light needed is always different. At first it was frustrating, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes exciting because now you can choose different exposures and know what alteration to the picture will occur. In relation to exposure, I was fairly successful with all of my images, which is amazing to me since this was my first time.
I am extremely thankful to have had this opportunity and will forever treasure the memories I’ve made in the past twelve weeks. If anyone I know has the opportunity to experience a class like this I would strongly encourage them. It’s more than just a class; it’s a new life experience and a memory I will cherish.
